The Data Engineering Director will shape enterprise data engineering strategy, define platform modernization roadmaps, and serve as a recognized technical leader across the organization. This role sets best practices, leads multi-region scale and disaster recovery initiatives, and guides enterprise portfolio decisions while mentoring senior data engineers and influencing broader technical direction.
This is a Full Time, hybrid, Director, Data Engineering role located in Brentwood, TN.
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Shape enterprise data engineering strategy and platform modernization roadmaps
- Define future-state platform architecture including multi-region scale, high availability, and disaster recovery
- Lead platform vendor selection and tool decisions aligned to enterprise objectives
- Articulate point-of-view on value and applicability of emerging methodologies and technologies
Enterprise Standards & Governance
- Set data engineering best practices and standards across the organization
- Lead development of reference architectures and implementation patterns
- Maintain enterprise knowledge base and technical documentation
- Guide M&A platform integration playbooks and strategies
Cross-Functional Influence
- Work beyond local boundaries to influence broader enterprise technical direction
- Guide enterprise portfolio decisions in partnership with Architecture and leadership
- Advise stakeholders on trade-offs between cost, performance, reliability, and time-to-delivery
- Communicate exec-level technical narratives on platform evolution and investment
Mentorship & Technical Excellence
- Mentor senior data engineers and build communities of practice
- Quickly develop SME-level understanding of emerging methodologies and technologies
- Demonstrate a track record of technical innovation
- Maintain currency in technology and recognized as technical leader across the enterprise
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering with demonstrated enterprise influence
- Deep expertise in cloud data platforms, Databricks, Spark, and lakehouse architecture
- Experience with multi-region deployment, high availability, and disaster recovery design
- Track record of platform modernization and vendor/tool selection decisions
- Recognized as technical leader across multiple parts of the enterprise
- Experience with M&A technical integration and platform consolidation
- Deep understanding of streaming architectures (Kafka, Spark Streaming)
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and DataOps practices
- Background in healthcare data platforms and compliance requirements (HIPAA)
- Track record of technical innovation and implementing novel engineering approaches
- Experience publishing internal standards or external technical content
